Nordfeld mine

Only a few remains of the wall and a few notice boards remind of the former pit.

The Nordfeld coal mine existed between 1889 and 1905 on the northern slope of the Höcherberg under the spell of the Saarland town of Höchen between the towns of Höchen, Waldmohr and Dunzweiler .

history

After a pit was built in neighboring Frankenholz in 1879 , the Leipzig merchant Rosenthal suspected that the seams found there would continue in a north-easterly direction.

Due to the geological conditions actually found, it soon became apparent that the economically viable amount of coal would be disproportionate to the investments already made.

The attempt to extend the mining concession to the north and northwest beyond the border of the Kingdom of Bavaria into Prussian territory failed because of the Prussian veto. So the mine was closed in 1905.

Machines and conveyor systems were sold to the Frankenholz mine . The headframe of the mine Nordfeld not exist, it stands at bay farmhouse of the former mine Kohlwald at Wiebelskirchen .

Overgrown evidence of this bad investment can still be found in the Waldmohr and Höchen districts . A historic hiking trail leads past the remains of the mine.

From 1903 to 1905, the mine was connected to the rail network by the Nordfeldbahn from Jägersburg-Waldmohr station on the Glantalbahn.
