template
Pattern generally denotes a structure that is characterized by repeated or parallel uniform occurrences, i.e. a way of thinking, designing or behavior or a corresponding course of action characterized by uniform repetition (reproduction). The word was borrowed in the 15th century from the Italian mostra "sign, display, exhibition", which goes back to the Latin mōnstrāre "show, indicate, instruct".
A pattern can exist in different instances of similar objects, so that these can be summarized after the pattern has been recognized: Taxonomy deals with patterns, for example in the biological taxonomy plants are grouped according to morphological characteristics.
Furthermore, a pattern can be a feature that is retained or reproduced when a larger context is repeated. The repetitions can be of a spatial (e.g. fabric samples) and / or temporal nature (e.g. behavioral patterns) or of a reproductive nature (e.g. as a template).
