aims

In order to achieve a sustainable development of the Balearic Islands, the GOB tries to influence the development with various measures. There is a demand to adapt the tourist land use to the ecological possibilities. In addition to actions against planned major construction projects, this also includes calls for the further development of local public transport and the rail network. An expansion of the already existing nature reserves as well as the designation of new areas are among the goals of the GOB such as measures to preserve the Balearic cultural landscape and biodiversity as well as the promotion of ecological agriculture. In addition, the GOB provides public relations work in the areas of schools, adult education and tourism.

Projects

The GOB primarily drives the following projects:

Environmental education

Environmental education for children, adolescents and adults is an important work area . The GOB publishes teaching and information material in order to raise awareness of environmentally relevant topics such as avoiding waste or saving water.

Species protection

The GOB campaigns for the protection of endangered animal and plant species, especially the red kite , the black vulture and the Greek tortoise .

Finca La Trapa

In 1980 the GOB bought the 81 hectare La Trapa property in the Serra de Tramuntana from donations in order to prevent the construction of major tourist projects on the area. In the area you can find numerous rare plant and animal species such as the Balearic Shearwater and the Balearic Warbler . The aim is to restore the old monastery in cooperation with the island council of Mallorca and to reforest the surrounding fallow land and use it for agriculture. After completion, the building will be used as a refuge on the GR 221 long-distance hiking trail .

Previous successes

Successful activities of the GOB in the Balearic Islands were the protection of the island of Sa Dragonera , the beach of Es Trenc in the municipality of Campos , the establishment of the Parc natural de Mondragó and the Parc natural de s'Albufera de Mallorca as well as the campaign to establish the Cabrera National Marine Park .
