Guðmundur Franklín Jónsson

Guðmundur Franklín Jónsson (born October 31, 1963 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic businessman, hotel manager and politician (formerly right-wing Green People's Party and Independence Party ). From 2010 to 2013, he was chairman of the Right-Green People's Party. In the 2020 presidential election in Iceland , he was the only opposing candidate of the re-elected incumbent Guðni Th. Jóhannesson .

Life

Professional career

Guðmundur Franklín Jónsson, who was commercially trained in Iceland and the USA, worked as a stockbroker on Wall Street until the dot-com bubble burst at the turn of the millennium . From 2005 to 2008 he attended a master's degree in international politics at Charles University in Prague . He founded a hotel in Prague, which he ran from 2002 to 2009. In 2012 he received a certificate as a tourist guide from the Icelandic tourism school Ferðamálaskóla Íslands . Since 2013 he has been the manager of a hotel in Gudhjem on Bornholm , Denmark .

politics

In 2010 Guðmundur Franklín founded the Right-Green People's Party . He was party chairman until 2013. In 2016 he first announced his candidacy for the presidential election , but then supported Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson when he announced that he would run for re-election. Ólafur Ragnar Grimsson also renounced his candidacy afterwards. Guðmundur Franklín applied for a place on the list as a candidate of the Independence Party for the general election in Iceland in 2016 , but did not receive it.

As a member of the Orkan okkar group ("Our Energy"), he fought against the implementation of the EU's Third Energy Package into national Icelandic law, which Iceland is obliged to do as a member of the EEA . In 2019, he resigned from the party to protest the Independence Party's stance on the issue.

In the 2020 presidential election in Iceland , Guðmundur Franklín Jónsson was the only opposing candidate for the incumbent Guðni Th. Jóhannesson . He was re-elected with 92.2% of the votes. Guðmundur Franklín Jónsson received 7.8%. He had announced that he wanted to use the powers of the President of Iceland more than Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, in particular by exercising the right of veto in legislation. Guðmundur Franklín Jónsson is considered a supporter of the American President Donald Trump .
