Live and act

Ricardo Brennand was born in 1927, the fifth generation of the descendants of the Englishman Edward Brennand, who immigrated to northeastern Brazil in 1820. His parents were Antônio Luiz de Almeida Brennand and Dulce Padilha Coimbra. He received his education at the Marist College in Recife (Colégio Marista) and at the former Colégio Osvaldo Cruz between 1937 and 1942.In 1949 he completed courses in engineering at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco , where he graduated as a general and mechanical engineer.

He later worked as a factory engineer and as an entrepreneur in his 20 or so factories, which mainly produced cement, steel, glass, sugar and ceramics. This made him the richest man in the poor northeast of Brazil.

His passion for art began at the age of 12 and never let go of him; On extensive trips to Europe and Asia, he bought all sorts of works of art, which he integrated into his extensive collection. It is characterized by many weapons, handicrafts, tapestries, sculptures with erotic poses, but also paintings from different eras of Brazilian art history. It contains one of the world's largest collections of paintings by the painter Frans Hals and works from the brief period of Dutch Brazil before this region reverted to Portugal.

In 1999 - after selling his cement factories for around 590 million dollars to the Cimpor group from Portugal - he founded the Instituto Ricardo Brennand , which houses his collection and is housed in a castle-like complex just outside Recife. The museum is open to everyone.

From 2009 he was also busy with investments in wind power and wind parks to make this topic better known in Brazil.

Ricardo Brennand spoke English and German fluently and without an accent.

The eight-time father was considered one of the richest men in Brazil with an estimated fortune of $ 1.2 billion. He came to Hospital Real Portugues in Recife on April 19, 2020 with signs of COVID-19 , where he died on April 25, 2020 at the age of 92.
