from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Guaicaipuro (* around 1530 in the area of Los Teques / Venezuela ; † 1568 ) was a Kazike (tribal leader) of some Caribbean tribes of the 16th century. He was called Guapotori (Leader of Leaders). Originally, Guaicaipuro was the leader of the Teques tribe.

Guaicaipuro formed an alliance of several tribes to fight against the invaders from Spain. The Naiguatá , Guaicamacuto , Chacao and Baruta belonged to this alliance . In the beginning the resistance was successful and the Spaniards were driven back several times.

It was only under the leadership of Diego de Losada that the Spaniards were able to occupy the city of Caracas . Guaicaipuro was then killed in battle with the Spaniards in front of his house.

The remains of Guaicaipuro were settled in the Panteón Nacional de Venezuela in Caracas on December 8, 2001 , where the remains of other Venezuelan liberation heroes, including Simón Bolívar, are located .
