The Panteón Nacional de Venezuela is a Venezuelan memorial in Caracas .

history

The building was erected in the middle of the 17th century as a Roman Catholic church building in honor of the Holy Trinity ( Iglesia de la Santísima Trinidad ) by Juan Domingo del Sacramento Infante at the north end of the old town of Caracas. The church was largely destroyed in the earthquake of 1812 and was not yet fully restored until 1874. The Venezuelan President Antonio Guzmán Blanco decided on March 27, 1874 by decree to rededicate the Trinity Church into a national pantheon for Venezuela. The entire former nave is dedicated to the South American freedom fighter Simón Bolívar . A bronze sarcophagus of the freedom fighter is placed at the former altar. The interior of the national pantheon is adorned with paintings from the 1930s depicting important scenes from the life of Bolivar. The large crystal chandelier was hung in the building in 1883.

The freedom fighters Francisco Rodriguez del Toro (Marqués del Toro), José Gregorio Monagas , Andrés Ibarra and Ezequiel Zamora were buried in the national pantheon in 1851 . Many other famous and important people from Venezuela are buried in this mausoleum .
