The Guanyin statue of Nanshan ( Chinese  南山 海上 观音 圣像 ) represents the Bodhisattva Guanyin . It has a total height of 108 m and is located on the south coast of China on the island of Hainan directly on the seashore next to the Nanshan Temple not far from the city of Sanya . Bodhisattva Guanyin is highly revered by Buddhists, especially in China. The deity is sometimes represented as a male and sometimes as a female person. She is a symbol of grace, wisdom and luck, she is also worshiped as the sea goddess.

The statue has three different sides so that you can see a different figure from each of the three sides. One view is from the land side, the second to the sea side partially towards Taiwan and the third to the open South China Sea . Each of the three figures represents Guanyin giving her blessing and protection on the land side towards China and on the sea side to the whole world. The three representations are different. In the figure on the land side, Guanyin holds a sutra in his left hand and makes the mudra gesture with the other hand . The second figure has lowered his arms, closed his hands and is holding a large prayer chain . The third figure shows lotus flowers in the hands.

The statue stands on an artificially created island that is accessible on foot via a causeway. The base is 30 m high and the actual figure 78 m. After a construction period of six years, the statue was inaugurated on April 14, 2005 . 108 Buddhist monks from other Asian countries and tens of thousands of pilgrims also took part in the celebration. With a total height of 108 m, the statue is currently (2020) the sixth highest statue in the world , the figure without a base holds the 14th place.

The statue belongs to the temple district of Nanshan, which is a popular destination on the holiday island of Heinan.
