Ewald Christian Victorin Dietrich (born July 19, 1785 in Grünhayn in the Ore Mountains , † January 1, 1832 in Leipzig ) was a German military doctor, obstetrician and writer.

Life

Ewald Christian Victorin Dietrich was born as the son of an electoral Saxon judiciary. He studied law for a while and then attended the Dresden Collegium medico-chirurgicum, the first medical school in the city of Dresden. Dietrich continued his medical studies in Leipzig and then did his doctorate in Jena. In Leipzig he met the regimental doctor Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805). In 1809 he joined a Saxon army corps as a junior surgeon, took part in the campaigns in Poland, Russia, the Netherlands and France, then became senior surgeon in 1815 and when Saxony was divided, he was employed as a senior physician in Prussia. He went with the Prussian army through the Rhineland, Liège and Paris. He also treated Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher (1742-1819). Dietrich then settled as a general practitioner in Scheibenberg and Moritzburg, and in 1820 he went to Italy with the Austrian army as a senior surgeon. This was followed by medical activities in Dresden, later in Leipzig, where he died on January 1, 1832.

Dietrich had a literary streak. He published under the pseudonyms E. Wahrmann and GF Horvath. He wrote poems, short stories, fairy tales, adventure novels and autobiographies.

Dietrich also dealt with nursing. In the book "Hausarzneikunde für Stadt und Land" published in 1823, Dietrich formulated home remedies for illnesses and instructions for home nursing. In 1827 the “Noth- und Helfsbüchlein for nurses” followed. Dietrich's conception of nursing resembles in some points the ideas of the Heidelberg doctor and social reformer Franz Anton Mai (1742-1814). The ideas of these two physicians mark the beginning of modern nursing.
