Guaraci , officially Portuguese Município de Guaraci , is a city in the northwest of the Brazilian state of São Paulo on the Rio Grande .

geography

According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) 2010 census, the community had 9,976 inhabitants. It lies at an altitude of 475 meters and has the geographical location 20 ° 29'56 "S 48 ° 56'42" W, the total area is 639 km².

Part of the area (approx. 15%) in the north of the urban area is covered by the floods of the Marimbondo dam , which was completed in 1975 and dams the Rio Grande . The reservoir is used to generate electricity, for irrigation and for recreational activities such as fishing etc. It is the second of the large reservoirs on the Rio Grande, after the Ilha-Solteira reservoir , which was opened in 1973, on the lower reaches of the river.

Neighboring towns are Icém, Altair, Olímpia, Barretos in the state of São Paulo and Fronteira (Minas Gerais) and Frutal in the state of Minas Gerais . The distance to the capital of the state is approximately 465 kilometers by road.

Mayor in 2011 was Renato Azeda Ribeiro Aguia. The city's motto is: Development and Social Justice .

history

The city's development began at the beginning of the 20th century after a piece of land was given to a religious order near the Rio Grande, a tributary of the Rio Paraná . Cattle breeding became very important, especially because of the proximity of the cold stores in Barretos. In the first decades of the 20th century, the cultivation of coffee by immigrants from Italy was an important economic factor. In 1944 Guaraci was separated from the city of Olímpia. Their further development continued to depend entirely on agricultural production. Since no commercial or industrial companies were established, the population began to move to the big cities in the 1940s.

With the beginning of the 1970s, the cultivation of oranges and other citrus fruits provided a certain economic boom. Since 2000, however, the cultivation of sugar cane has been the most important source of income. The construction and completion of the sugar factory led to an immigration of workers into the city.

Sugar and Ethanol Factory

The Vertente facility, completed in 2003, is located approx. 15 kilometers from the city center. At the beginning of 2010, 50% of the company was acquired by Açúcar Guaraní SA , which already owned two other sugar factories in Cruz Alta and São José nearby and therefore hoped for considerable synergies.

The purchase price for the 50% of the plant and the arable land was R $ 105 million . Vertente should produce 1.7 million tons of sugar cane in 2010/2011 and use it to produce 117,000 tons of sugar and 72,000 cubic meters of ethanol . These figures are to be increased to 2.2 million tons of sugar cane, 165,000 tons of sugar and 92,000 m³ of ethanol in the 2011/2012 financial year. Half of the residues from production, the bagasse , have so far been used to fertilize the sugar cane fields and the other half in the biomass power plants belonging to the plant to generate steam, which is used for the manufacturing processes and for generating electricity.
