Guarneri (family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Guarneri is a traditional Cremonese family of violin makers from the 17th and 18th centuries. Andrea Guarneri (approx. 1623 / 26–1698) was a pupil and assistant to Nicola Amati .

Andrea's eldest son Pietro Guarneri I (1655–1720) was also a violin maker and worked mainly in Mantua . Andreas' second son Giuseppe Giovanni (1666 – ca. 1739/40), who was later given the nickname filius Andreae , continued his father's work.

His sons Pietro Guarneri II (1695–1762), who mainly worked in Venice , and (Bartolomeo) Giuseppe Antonio , known as Joseph Guarnerius del Gesù (1698–1744), were also violin makers. The instruments of Joseph Guarnerius Del Gesùs belong, along with those of Antonio Stradivari, to the most sought-after and most expensive instruments.

The string quartet Guarneri String Quartet , founded in 1964, is named after the violin-making family.
