Gudmund Björck
Gudmund Björck (full name Rudolf Gudmund Björck ; born August 1, 1905 in Uppsala , † June 1, 1955 ibid) was a Swedish classical philologist .
Life
Gudmund Björck, the son of the pastor and writer Erland Björck (1877–1951), grew up in Uppsala and Kalmar . From 1923 he studied classical philology at Uppsala University with Otto Lagercrantz and also spent a few semesters in Berlin and Paris, where he acquired skills in working with papyri from Wilhelm Schubart and Alphonse Dain . In 1932 he published a monograph on the Corpus Hippiatricorum Graecorum , with which he was awarded a Dr. phil. received his doctorate . From 1933 to 1941 he worked as a lecturer in ancient languages at the university; afterwards he taught at Fjellstedtska skolan , a private school in Uppsala. On September 22, 1945 he was appointed as the successor to Gunnar Rudberg as professor of Greek language and literature at Uppsala University, where he taught until his untimely death. On November 4, 1952, he was elected a working member of the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies in Stockholm. Bjöck died of a heart attack on June 1, 1955.
Björck dealt with broad areas of Greek literature from the Homeric epics to the New Testament to late antiquity . He published monographs on the Greek specialist writers in equine medicine ( veterinary medicine ), on Greek verbal and nominal inflection and on early Christian religious practice. In addition, he successfully tried to establish contact with the international professional community. He himself published his writings in Swedish, German and French and for a long time gave the trade journal Eranos. Acta philologica Suecana out, appeared in the contributions of ancient scientists from around the world, such as the first essays of Michael Ventris on the decipherment of Linear B .
