The Gudvangatunnel ( Norwegian Gudvangatunnelen ) is a road tunnel on European route 16 between Gudvangen and the village of Undredal in Vestland Province , Norway .
It opened in 1991 and was Norway's longest tunnel until the Lærdal Tunnel was completed in 2000. Together with this and the Flenja tunnel, there are 43 kilometers of tunnels on a 51.5 kilometer route.
On August 5, 2013, a truck burned down in the tunnel, 2-3 kilometers from the Undredal side. A major rescue operation was initiated, rescuing 70 people and taking them to surrounding hospitals in Lærdal , Førde , Bergen and Voss . Among them was a 24-person tour group from China.
