The historic chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia

history

The original settlement was founded by the Romans . The Arabs conquered it after 711 and named the place Alfontes .

The present town emerged much later, around the pilgrimage chapel of Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Guia . Located on a hill called Cerro de São Sebastião and built in the 16th century, legend has it that an apparition of Mary brought about the construction of the chapel. Believers may have come here since the end of the 15th century and built the chapel later. Settlement then spread from the hill, but very slowly.

In 1548 a Moorish sea attack occurred on the nearby coast near Albufeira , in which six farmers were abducted as slaves. Thereupon, still under the rule of King D. João III. , erected a watchtower here, as part of a coastal surveillance system. In 1617 the municipality of Guia was created. Since then it has belonged to the Albufeira district.
