Guido Werdnig (born June 20, 1844 in Ratschach ; † April 26, 1919 ) was a neurologist from Graz . In 1891, together with the Heidelberg neurologist Johann Hoffmann, he described the most vicious form of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), also known as SMA type I or Werdnig-Hoffmann syndrome.

Life

After completing his medical degree, Werdnig initially served ten years in the army. During this time he published several articles in a military journal about the transport of wounded soldiers in mountainous terrain. As a civilian, he settled in Graz in 1888, practiced as a neurologist and became an employee of the Institute for Pathological Anatomy. In 1896 he moved to Vienna and resumed his neurological work. When he died in 1919, he had been bedridden for twelve years due to spastic paralysis.
