Guido Werdnig (born June 20, 1844 in Ratschach ; † April 26, 1919 ) was a neurologist from Graz . In 1891, together with the Heidelberg neurologist Johann Hoffmann, he described the most vicious form of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), also known as SMA type I or Werdnig-Hoffmann syndrome.
Life
After completing his medical degree, Werdnig initially served ten years in the army. During this time he published several articles in a military journal about the transport of wounded soldiers in mountainous terrain. As a civilian, he settled in Graz in 1888, practiced as a neurologist and became an employee of the Institute for Pathological Anatomy. In 1896 he moved to Vienna and resumed his neurological work.
