Guilherme de Faria

Guilherme de Faria (born October 6, 1907 in Guimarães , Portugal ; † January 4, 1929 at Boca do Inferno , near Cascais , Portugal) was a Portuguese poet.

Live and act

Guilherme de Faria was born the son of a doctor in Guimaraes. In 1919 the family moved to Lisbon . He has been writing since childhood and published his first volume of poetry at the young age of 14, which was to be followed by several others and publications in various anthologies .

He was in correspondence with many important figures in the intellectual life of Portugal, such as Mario Saa and Antonio Pedro . The well-read young man left a huge library with more than 900 books. In the photographs he has handed down, he looks very similar to the poet Fernando Pessoa .

His work is close to neo-romanticism or neogarrettismo and integralism and is characterized by calm and sadness as well as an indefinite, sweetish melancholy .

On January 4, 1929, he committed suicide at the age of 21 years at the Boca do Inferno , a rock formation on the coast of Cascais , suicide . In 2007, a literary prize, the Prémio Guilherme de Faria , was announced in his memory .
