Guillem de Copons

Guillem de Copons ( 14th century ; † 15th century ) was a writer and diplomat. Possibly he was of Valencian origin. He made some translations into Catalan of some important works from ancient Greece , ancient Rome and the European Middle Ages .

He was the groom of Kings Peter IV and Johann I. They commissioned him with some literary tasks. He also had relationships with the Lord Master of the Order of St. John Juan Fernández de Heredia . In 1383 he had brought a French version of Augustine's De Civitate Dei to King John I on behalf of the Duke of Berry . He had been sent by the king to visit this duke again in order to obtain a copy of the manuscript of the French version of Ab urbe condita by Titus Livius . The Catalan translations then made from these French versions have been traced back to him. In 1396 the Queen Violante von Bar sent him as an ambassador to the papal court in Avignon and also to some French nobles to investigate the threats of an invasion of Catalonia by the Duke of Armagnac. But that was in vain because King John I died. In 1418 he dedicated his Catalan version of Brunetto Latini's treasure to the Valencian patron Pere d'Artés . This work was written in French and also included the ethics of Aristotle . Though this version was not straightforward, it turned out to be the first Catalan version of this classic writer.
