Gunārs Lūsis (born December 18, 1950 in Riga ) is a graphic designer and artist from Latvia .

Gunārs Lūsis graduated from Janis Rozentāls Art High School in 1968 and from the Latvian Art Academy (Faculty of Design) in 1974 .

Since 1976 he has been a member of the Artists Union of Latvia.

Brief work at “Literatūra un Māksla” newspaper. Freelance artist since 1978.

Artistic focus and work

Gunārs Lūsis works in a wide range of graphic design such as B. Design of posters, book graphics and design, brands, advertising, trade fair displays, wall paintings, etc. Together with Jānis Strupulis, he designed a series of the Latvian coin Lats (1992), the 2 Lats bimetal coin (1999) and a variant des 1 Lats (1999, 2001) and many more. In 2013, together with Jānis Strupulis, he designed the 20 Lats silver coin with the theme of Silver Salmon. Due to his efforts, he is also known as the " father of the Latvian Lat " because after Latvian independence in 1991, he played a key role in shaping and influencing the concept and design of the Latvian hard currency.

He designed the logo for the Latvian EU Council Presidency in 2015 .

Gunārs Lūsis has designed many other well-known logos, e.g. B. That of the Cultural Capital Foundation, the Opera Foundation, the Latvian Institute, "Rīga 800", Arsenāls Cinema Forum, Hotel Bergs, SALMO fishing store, LIDO restaurants, forum Lugano, Latvian Institute, Riga Graduate School of Law, Riga Stradinš University , Soros Fund Latvia etc. About seventy logos in total.

Exhibitions and awards

Since 1967 exhibitions in Latvia and various countries in Europe and Colorado (USA).

In 1990 he received the "Grand Prix" of the Poster Biennale Vilnius, awards from the Latvian Ministry of Culture, won prizes at the "Baltic and Latvian Book Grapics Competition" for several years, and in 1996 was nominated for the best book graphic design (Nauda Latvijā).
