Gunnar Matysiak

Gunnar Matysiak is a German painter , graphic artist and illustrator . He became known through illustrations of children's books , in particular the children's classic Rennschwein Rudi Rüssel by Uwe Timm .

Life

Born in East Friesland , he moved with his family to Hagen as a child and began doing commissioned work and municipal exhibitions there at a young age. After training as a decorator , studying graphic design and then studying education , he worked alongside his work as a freelance artist as an art and craft teacher at secondary schools and grammar schools and as a lecturer at the Wuppertal University of Applied Sciences .

In the mid-1970s he went to America and founded his own design studio in Huntington . In America he met his future wife Loretta. A few years later he returned to Germany with her and the first of three children, daughter Amy. In the 1980s he worked as a freelance art director for various advertising agencies, for television companies ( ARD ) and for book and magazine publishers. In 1978 he founded the company "Matysiak & Barth Art Direction" together with Albrecht Michael Barth, which he continued to run in Weyarn from 1984 as the "SGM advertising agency". This is now being run in the second generation by his daughter Johanna as "SGM 2" in Munich.

After he filmed Uwe Timm's first children's book “Die Zugmaus” for ARD in 1982, he illustrated Uwe Timm's second children's book, Die Piratenamsel , published in 1983 . In 1989 he worked again with the author. The children's book Rennschwein Rudi Rüssel received many international awards after the “German Youth Literature Prize”, was globally successful and filmed in 1994 with Ulrich Mühe and Iris Berben in the leading roles. In Germany, the 26th edition with over 1,100,000 copies was published in 2014 by Deutscher Taschenbuch Verlag (dtv junior)

In addition to his work as a graphic designer, for which he has received multiple awards from the Art Directors Club Germany, he is now an advertising designer, artist and teacher.
