Gunnar von Proschwitz

Gunnar von Proschwitz (born July 29, 1922 in Gothenburg , † March 5, 2005 ) was a Swedish Romance studies and literary scholar, specialist of the 18th century.

Life

Proschwitz switched from studying classical archeology, which had taken him to Italy, to Romance studies and graduated in 1949. As a student of Karl Michaëlsson , he received his doctorate (after a stay in Paris) in Gothenburg in 1956 with the thesis "Introduction à l'étude du vocabulaire de Beaumarchais" (Stockholm 1956, Geneva 1981). First lecturer in Gothenburg, he held the first chair in French language and literature at Uppsala University , then professor at Gothenburg University , where he retired in 1988.

In 1999 Proschwitz received the Grand Prix de la Francophonie of the Académie française .

Gunnar von Proschwitz was married to Mavis von Proschwitz.
