Gunter Malle (born May 13, 1960 in Karlsruhe ) is a German mathematician who deals with group theory , representation theory of finite groups and number theory.

Gunter Malle, Oberwolfach 2006

Malle received his doctorate in 1986 at the University of Karlsruhe under Heinrich Matzat ( exceptional groups of the Lie type as Galois groups ). He completed his habilitation in 1991 at the University of Heidelberg and from 1998 was a professor at the University of Kassel. Since 2005 he has been a professor at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern .

Malle conducts research on linear algebraic groups and finite groups of the Lie type and local-global conjectures in the representation theory of finite groups (by Richard Brauer , Jonathan L. Alperin (Weight Conjecture) and John McKay ).

In 1993 he started a collaboration with Michel Broué and Jean Michel through Spetses (named after the Greek island where the program was initiated). The starting point was the question of whether every finite complex reflection group is a Weyl group of an object analogous to a finite group of the Liet type. They called the unknown objects still to be constructed Spetses.

He deals with the Cohen - Lenstra heuristics of the structure of class groups of quadratic number fields in algebraic number theory, the asymptotic distribution of Galois groups of number fields and with the inverse problem of Galois theory.

In 1998 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin ( Spetses ).

In 1994 he received the Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize for German-French scientific cooperation.
