Jonathan Lazare Alperin , also Jon Alperin, (born June 2, 1937 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American mathematician who deals with group theory.

Life

Alperin studied at Harvard University ( Bachelor's degree in 1959) and Princeton University , with a Master's degree in 1960 and a doctorate in 1961 with Graham Higman ( On a Special Class of Regular p-Groups ). As a post-doctoral student he was at the University of Oxford in 1961/62 and as a Moore Instructor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1962/63 . In 1963 he became Assistant Professor , 1966 Associate Professor and 1970 Professor at the University of Chicago .

He is known for the Alperin-Brauer-Gorenstein theorem (with Richard Brauer , Daniel Gorenstein ), which classifies the simple finite groups with quasidihedral Sylow-2 subgroups . He is also known for the Alperin Weight Conjecture ( Alperin Weight Conjecture ).

He has been at the Institute for Advanced Study (1969, 1979, 1983) and visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley (1981), Oxford (All Souls College 1981), the University of Georgia (Cantrell Lecturer 2002) and the University of Paris VII (1982). In 1990 he was at MSRI . In 1974/75 he was a Guggenheim Fellow . In 2012 he became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
