Gunther Köhler (born May 20, 1965 in Hanau ) is a German herpetologist . His research is primarily in Central America and the West Indies .

Life

In 1995 Köhler received his doctorate in natural sciences at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main with a dissertation on the systematics and ecology of black iguanas (genus Ctenosaura) . Since November 1995 he has been a curator at the Department of Herpetology and since 2004 Acting Head of the Department of Terrestrial Zoology at the Senckenberg Research Institute .

The projects of Köhler and his research group focus on the study of the neotropical herpetofauna in Central and South America, especially in Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua and Bolivia. The studies are taxonomic, zoogeographical and phylogenetic, with the anoles forming one of the main groups.

In 1994 he succeeded in rediscovering the Utila iguana , a species previously only known from the type specimens from 1901. Since April 1998 Köhler has been running a conservation breeding program on Utila together with the Frankfurt Zoological Society .

In 2016 he and S. Blair Hedges presented a revision of the anole species of Hispaniola . These include eight newly discovered species that are limited to small areas of distribution and are threatened with extinction.

Köhler was involved in the first descriptions of over 120 reptile and amphibian species, including from the genera Agama , Anolis , Brookesia , Ctenosaura , Paracontias , Stenocercus , Leptopelis and Pristimantis .

In his spare time, Köhler is a member of the Aschaffenburg country band Flagstaff.

In 1992 Köhler's wife Elke founded Herpeton Verlag in Offenbach with the aim of providing reptile owners with particularly well-founded knowledge about their fosterlings.
