Guo Xu ( 1456 ; † 1526 ) was a Chinese artist who lived during the Ming Dynasty . A poem with a drawing of a landscape and a fisherman is preserved and is kept in the Detroit Institute of Arts .

Life

The year Guo Xu was born is controversial among experts. What is certain is that he passed the state examination on the teachings of Confucius in Nanjing in 1471 . It is probably thanks to the simple circumstances that Guo Xu turned to studying classical literature - at that time the only chance for professional advancement. He remained a civil servant in Wu Prefecture until his death and wrote numerous poems about the scenery of the Yangtze River Delta. One of the most famous poems is kept in the Detroit Institute of Arts .

reception

Although Guo Xu was only considered a mediocre artist in the professional world, the motif of the failed artist sparked the imagination of many Chinese authors after 1990 . Cheng Wei, known for her youth stories and columns in the Yangtze Evening Gazette (Yangzi-Wanbao), developed a literary interweaving between the Ming dynasty and the American present in her new novel. Casey Rourke, the protagonist of the novella, projects his yearnings into the past Ming dynasty and at the end of the third chapter travels to Nanjing to fathom the traces of the forgotten poet.
