Hermann Martin Gustav Gisevius , Polish Gustaw Herman Marcin Gizewiusz (born May 21, 1810 in Johannisburg , † May 7, 1848 in Osterode in East Prussia ) was a German pastor and linguist in Masuria.

Life

Gisevius came from an old Masurian family. After graduating from the Royal Lyck High School , he studied Protestant theology at the Albertus University in Königsberg . In 1828 he became a member of the Corps Masovia . In 1835 he became a pastor at the Polish Church in Osterode. He married a Masurian woman and began to be politically active. Like many Protestant pastors, he wanted to preserve the unique legacy of the Masurians : Polish language , Protestantism and loyalty to the Crown of Prussia . Gisevius was particularly committed to preserving the Polish language in Masuria . With the Przyjaciel Ludu Lecki he founded the first secular magazine in Masuria. He also edited the Leipzig yearbooks for Slavic literature, art and science .

Awards

With Christoph Cölestin Mrongovius , Gisevius was posthumously declared an “activist in the struggle for Masurian polity”. In 1946 the town of Lötzen in the former East Prussia was renamed Giżycko in honor of Gisevius .
