Gustav Meretta
Gustav Meretta (born June 26, 1832 in Brno , † August 4, 1888 in Olomouc ) was a Czech architect .
Live and act
Meretta studied at the Brno University of Technology from 1847 to 1852 . After working as an engineer on the Bohemian estates of the Lobkowitz princes , he moved to the building department of the Olomouc Archbishops in Kremsier . There he advanced to the position of building director and received the title of “chief engineer and diocesan master builder”. A number of new churches were built based on his designs, including in Rosswald (1869–1873) and Bochorz (1872–1875). The Church of the Redeemer in Ostrava (1883–1889), now a cathedral, was completed by Max von Ferstel . His late main work is the thorough restoration of the cathedral of St. Wenceslas in Olomouc , in the course of which the two Romanesque towers were demolished and replaced by a neo-Gothic west facade (1883–1890). After Meretta's death, the renovation was continued by the Viennese architect Richard Völkel .
