Cathedral of the Divine Savior (Ostrava)
The Cathedral of the Divine Savior (Czech. Katedrála Božského Spasitele ) in the Moravian city of Ostrava is the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic diocese of Ostrava-Troppau .
History and architecture
The former village of Mährisch Ostrau grew into an industrial city in the last third of the 19th century on the basis of hard coal mining. The only church of St. Wenceslas until the 1870s was no longer sufficient. Between 1883 and 1889, the new parish church of the Divine Redeemer was built.
According to plans by Gustav Meretta and Max von Ferstel , a representative three-aisled basilica in the neo-renaissance style was built . The semicircular main apse and two side apses adjoin the seven-bay nave in the southeast, and the portal facade with the two 67 m high towers in the northwest.
The interior is framed in white, coffered and structured with pillars with front half-columns and horizontal beams. The equipment is economical and takes a back seat to the clear spatial effect.
With the establishment of the Ostrava-Troppau diocese by Pope John Paul II in 1996, the Church of the Redeemer was elevated to a cathedral. In 1998 she received a new large organ.
