Gustav Nick

Gustav Nick (born November 23, 1837 in Lauffen am Neckar , † June 25, 1904 in Darmstadt ) was a German librarian .

Life

Gustav Adolf Nick was born in November 1837 as the son of Karl Martin Nick and his wife Christine Friederike Fehleisen in Lauffen am Neckar. Nick studied Classical Philology at the University of Giessen. During his studies he worked in the university library in Giessen. Here his decision to pursue the library profession matured. However, this was not immediately possible for him. For several years he worked as a teacher at the secondary school in Offenbach am Main . Not until 1875 did he get a job as an accessist at the court library in Darmstadt . In October 1875 he became the second class secretary at the court library. In the following years he went through the library career. In 1877 he became secretary first class and finally in December 1890 court librarian. After Wilhelm Maurer's death , he was appointed director of the court library in January 1895. He held this office until his death in June 1904. Nick published v. a. scientific work on local history.

Nick was part-time librarian of the Historisches Verein von Hessen, founded in 1832, and editor of the quarterly papers of the Historisches Verein. Karl Esselborn described Gustav Nick as follows: "Nick was a hardworking and extremely conscientious worker who, however, because he treated the main and the secondary in the same way, often got lost in the petty and was unable to carry out major plans."

Gustav Adolf Nick died in Darmstadt in June 1904 at the age of 66. He had been married to Albertine Josephine Böttigheimer since 1867.
