Gustav Solar

Gustav Solar (born August 28, 1916 , † March 6, 1997 ) was a Czech art historian and translator.

Origin and life

Solar, who originally came from Bohemia , received his doctorate in 1947 from the University of Prague with a thesis on the polyphony of art history . After completing his studies, he first worked in the diplomatic service of Czechoslovakia and then became a freelance translator. He transferred children's literature as well as art history and tourism texts, but z. B. also (together with Felix R. Bosonnet) Pavel Kohouts novel From the diary of a counterrevolutionary , from Czech into German. From August 1961 to October 1968 he was also the editor-in - chief of the culture magazine In the Heart of Europe published by Orbis-Verlag .

Solar emigrated to the suppression of the Prague Spring in Switzerland . There he worked until 1981 as a scientific librarian and deputy head of the graphic collection of the Zurich Central Library and wrote art historical writings.
