Gustav Strahl (born February 16, 1906 in Reppist , † January 16, 1977 ) was a German local politician. From 1950 to 1962 he was mayor of the city of Wernigerode .

Life

Gustav Strahl came from the Prussian district of Calau . His place of birth is Reppist, a place that is now almost completely abandoned due to lignite mining northeast of Senftenberg . Here he was born in 1906 as the son of Gustav Strahl († 1920) and his wife Ida geb. Moritz born. He was the seventh of eight children born to his parents.

In Magdeburg , the capital of the Prussian province of Saxony , Gustav Strahl attended elementary school, where he also experienced the First World War. At the age of 12 he already joined the Workers' Gymnastics Association (ATB), from which the Workers' Gymnastics and Sports Association (ATSB), the sports association of the workers' movement in the German Reich , emerged in 1919 . Gustav Strahl initially worked as a youth leader at the ATSB, and later as a swimming and pool attendant.

Gustav Strahl finished an apprenticeship as a lathe operator in 1924. After Gustav Strahl lost his job as a lathe operator in the R. Wolf AG in Magdeburg in the following year , he briefly went to Berlin as a lathe operator, where he found work and the German Metalworkers Association (DMV ) , which was dissolved in May 1933.

After returning to Magdeburg, he worked as a lathe operator in various companies and factories until 1945. In his spare time he worked for several years as a swimming master in the lido in Biederitz am Biederitzer See.

Gustav Strahl became politically active in the SPD from 1929, which he had joined as a member and which he belonged to until it was banned by the National Socialists in 1933. In 1945 he revived his party membership in the SPD and thus automatically became a member of the SED in 1946.

Professionally, he worked for a social security fund in 1945/46 before he was elected mayor of the community of Düsedau for the SED in 1946 . He resigned from this position in 1947 to join the police of the federal states (later the German People's Police) in Saxony-Anhalt . Here he worked in the city of Osterburg and achieved the rank of major.

In 1950 Gustav Strahl succeeded Max Otto ( SED ) as first mayor of the city of Wernigerode. In 1962, on the advice of the attending physicians, he applied for a dismissal from his position as mayor. The unanimous election of his successor, Martin Kilian (SED), on the unified list of the National Front took place on October 24, 1962 in the city council.
