Martin Kilian

Martin Kilian (born May 21, 1928 in Strehlitz , Namslau district ; † July 2, 2014 in Wernigerode ) was a German bobsledder , sports official and local politician ( SED ).

Life

After being expelled from Lower Silesia , Kilian worked as a miner in Nachterstedt . In 1948 he joined the SED . From 1950 to 1957 he was active as a bobsleigh driver . From 1951 to 1959 he worked as a teacher and in 1959 became director of the Wilhelm Raabe Oberschule in Wernigerode . When Mayor Gustav Strahl resigned there for health reasons in 1962, he became his successor at the suggestion of the SED district leadership. His election took place in the city council on October 24, 1962. Then he was Mayor of Wernigerode for almost 28 years until May 1990. In the local elections in May 1990, he no longer ran and took early retirement.

From 1982 to 1990 Kilian was president of the GDR sled and bobsleigh association . He was also Vice President of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (FIBT).

In March 1990 Kilian was elected the last president of the German Gymnastics and Sports Federation (DTSB) of the GDR. The DTSB dissolved on December 15, 1990 when it joined the German Sports Association (DSB) and five new state sports associations were founded. In October 1991 Kilian resigned from the position of Vice President he had assumed at the DSB.

He died at the age of 87 in the Caroline-König-Stift in Wernigerode.
