history

The association was founded on November 23, 1923 as the Fédération Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing ( FIBT ) in Paris and initially only united the international bobsleigh sport. In 1927 , sled racing - also known as luge or tobogganing - and skeleton sports were added as a separate section. However, the tobogganers separated from the FIBT in 1957 and founded their own association, the Fédération Internationale de Luge de Course (FIL) . The skeleton riders stayed in the FIBT. In many regional associations, there is no such separation between bobsleigh, skeleton and sled racing. In Germany, bobsleigh and sled athletes have been united under different names in today's Bobsleigh and Sled Association for Germany (BSD) since 1911 .

The association is responsible for the rules in bobsleigh and skeleton, for youth and junior sports as well as for the implementation of international events such as the World Championships, the World Cup, the European Championships, the European Cup, the North American Cup and the Olympic competitions.

In 2015 it was officially renamed the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation. French was also deleted as a language. Instead, the association now communicates and negotiates in German in addition to English.
