  • Helsinki / Finland : In the parliamentary elections in Finland, the previous center-left coalition of the liberal Finnish Center Party and the Social Democrats retains the government majority and Matti Vanhanen can continue to govern.
  • Ruapehu District / New Zealand : At Ruapehu , a 2797  m high stratovolcano on the northern island of New Zealand, a point breaks in the wall of the 17 hectare crater lake 250 m below the summit. A mudslide pours through the valley of the Whangaehu River past the village of Tangiwai into the sea. As the mudslide had been expected by experts for years, a warning system had been installed that alerted the authorities at an early stage. Road and rail connections could be blocked and nobody is harmed. Only a memorial for the 151 dead from a similar avalanche 54 years ago is damaged.
