Mullah Obaidullah Achund (* unknown; † March 5, 2010 in Karachi ) was a leading Afghan Talib .

Achund, who was defense minister during the Taliban's rule, is considered one of the two closest confidants of Taliban leader Mullah Omar and was a member of the Taliban's so-called Quetta Council . According to Taliban spokesman Abdul Latif Hakimi, who was arrested in 2005, Achund was one of only two people who had direct access to Mullah Omar. He had personally ordered attacks such as the one on foreign relief services in March 2005.

After 2001 he was considered the key figure of the Taliban in the flare-up guerrilla war .

At the end of February 2007, shortly after complaints from the United States, he was arrested by Pakistani intelligence officers in the provincial capital of Quetta . Several other Taliban were also arrested. Among them are two key leaders, Amir Khan Haqqani, commander of the Afghan province of Zabul, and Abdul Bari, ex-governor of Helmand , according to Dawn newspaper . In 2007 he threatened suicide bombings against the Bundeswehr in Afghanistan .

Obaidullah was exchanged for 200 captured Pakistani soldiers by the Taliban in November 2007 . He was arrested again in February 2008 and died in a Karachi prison on March 5, 2010.
