  • Brussels / Belgium : The regulation of the European Union (EU) concerning hand luggage for air travel comes into force in the EU member states. On the occasion of the attempted attacks in London , only the smallest amounts of liquids and creams (less than 0.1 liters) can be taken on the plane. They must be presented in a transparent plastic bag (smaller than 1 liter) during the inspection . Larger quantities must be carried in checked baggage or will be confiscated.
  • Brussels / Belgium : At the meeting of the Eurogroup , its chairman, Luxembourg's Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker , praised the German budget policy, which was criticized just a year ago. Germany is now taking the reformed Stability Pact very seriously to make provisions for bad times during an upswing. The 12 finance ministers had previously debated economic developments and the state of public finances. The Commission intends to recommend an end to the excessive deficit procedure against Germany in the coming year, because Germany’s new debt is likely to fall to 2.3% this year.
  • Dushanbe / Tajikistan : The people elect the current president, Emomalij Rahmonov, who has ruled dictatorially since 1992, as head of state of the republic for the third time. The electoral commission states that the winner received 79% of the vote.

  • Brussels / Belgium : In a new report, the European Union criticizes Turkey for its little progress in the reform process, in the countries of the Western Balkans it sees a largely positive trend, especially in economic issues.
  • Managua / Nicaragua : The presidential elections resulted in a victory for the former president and Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega with almost 40%. According to the constitution, only a relative majority exceeding 5% is required in the first ballot . In a runoff election , the conservative candidate Montealegre would have had the better chance.
  • Peshawar / Pakistan : Around 20 recruits are killed and 30 others injured in a rebel attack on a training camp run by the Pakistani army.
  • Washington, DC / United States : Initial counts of the congressional elections seem safe for a majority of Democrats in the House of Representatives, while the outcome of the US Senate is still undecided. In order to take over the majority from the Republican Party here too, the Democratic Party would have to win three of six combat mandates. Currently (as of 8 p.m. CET), this can be expected with five Senate seats. Rarely have so many prominent Republicans been voted out of office in recent decades. For the first time a Muslim is among the elected. Donald Rumsfeld has stepped down as Secretary of Defense.
  • Vienna / Austria : An ultimatum from the SPÖ to the ÖVP because of the interrupted government negotiations is rejected by the latter. It is counterproductive to the reduction in mistrust (addressed by Federal President Heinz Fischer, among others). Alfred Gusenbauer's invitation to a one-on-one conversation with Wolfgang Schüssel , however, would follow.

  • Dannenberg / Germany : The tenth Castor transport with highly radioactive nuclear waste has been on the move since November 11th - from the La Hague reprocessing plant to the interim storage facility in Gorleben in Wendland, Lower Saxony . 16,000 police officers secure the railway line from possible blockade actions by anti-nuclear activists. The twelve Castor containers arrive at the Dannenberg loading station in the afternoon and are to be transported by road to Gorleben on Mondays.

  • Karlsruhe / Germany : The Federal Court of Justice decides on the appeal proceedings of the alleged terrorist Mounir al-Motassadeq . It is expected that the proceedings against the Moroccan will be restarted because of new leads. Motassedeq had been acquitted by the Hamburg Higher Regional Court with regard to complicity in the murder in the September 11, 2001 attacks .
  • Kathmandu / Nepal : After weeks of negotiations, the government and the Maoist rebels sign an agreement to end the civil war . The rebel groups, who have had a large part of the mountain regions under their control for years, will send 6 ministers to the government of around 20 people.
  • Paris / France : The Socialist Party chooses after weeks of pre-election campaign their candidates for the April 2007 held presidential election . Favorite is the former environment minister and partner of party leader Hollande, Ségolène Royal . She accuses her opponents Laurent Fabius and Dominique Strauss-Kahn of "machismo", whereupon Fabius asks who is taking care of her children. 220,000 PS party members are called for the area code, of which a surprising 80% participate. Royal receives 60.6%, eliminating the need for an internal runoff election. In the April 2007 election, the current Minister of the Interior, Nicolas Sarkozy, will run for the Conservatives.
  • Salzburg / Austria : The writer Walter Kappacher receives the Salzburg Art Prize. The prize, which is awarded for the fifth time this year and is endowed with 15,000 euros, goes to a writer for the second time.
  • Vienna / Austria : The executive committee of the ÖVP is advising whether the government negotiations with the SPÖ , which was interrupted at the end of October after parliamentary disruptions and are pushing for a grand coalition, should be resumed, and decides whether to continue on the condition that the SPÖ does not participate in parliament in the future forms a common front against the People's Party with the FPÖ or the Greens. Tomorrow another top-level meeting between the party leaders Schüssel and Gusenbauer is to take place, because of the fact that Federal President Heinz Fischer ended his state visit to Luxembourg prematurely. If a grand coalition does not come about, there is likely to be a minority government of the Social Democrats, which only has 68 out of 183 members.

They will "work hand in hand to achieve security for Brother Iraq."
  • Beirut / Lebanon : Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel is assassinated. According to Prime Minister Rafik Hariri (February 2005), it is the 5th murder of a politician critical of Syria. President Émile Lahoud condemns the attack as "a catastrophe that hit all Lebanese"; many now fear a resurgence of the civil war. The UN Security Council calls Gemayel “a symbol of freedom and political independence” for the country and decides on an international tribunal to kill Hariri. Gemayel's Phalange party belongs to the anti-Syrian parliamentary majority, which has threatened to overthrow the pro-Syrian Hezbollah since leaving the government.
  • Berlin / Germany : The German Athletics Association (DLV) is initiating an investigation against Nils Schumann and Grit Breuer on suspicion of doping . The trigger for this is information from the files of the criminal case against the coach Thomas Springstein, who was convicted of doping .
  • Brussels / Belgium : In the future, the automobile manufacturer Volkswagen AG would only like to produce the Golf in Wolfsburg and Mosel . Around 4,000 jobs are therefore at risk in Belgium. Jan Peter Balkenende
  • The Hague / Netherlands : In the Netherlands, around twelve million eligible voters go to the polls to decide on the 150 seats in the Second Chamber, the representative body . According to surveys, there should be a close race between the ruling Christian Democrats ( CDA ) headed by Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende and the Social Democrats ( PvdA ) headed by opposition leader Wouter Bos . A grand coalition was not previously ruled out. On the evening of the election, Prime Minister Balkenende was seen as the winner of the parliamentary elections , as he had cleverly reinterpreted the boredom that he had previously claimed as reliability during the election campaign. Next to him, the socialists are the real election winners, while the social democrats have lost ground. Barkenende will still have to look for a coalition partner.

Until the very end, the other Europeans cannot persuade the Polish delegation to give up their blockade, and Russia is not giving in either.

  • Berlin / Germany : The Federal Cabinet decides to introduce its draft law on “ Pension at 67” to the Bundestag . If the reform is implemented, the standard retirement age , starting in 2012, would be gradually increased from 65 to 67 years and, on the other hand, a new rule would come into force according to which each insured person would be granted their full pension after 45 years of contribution regardless of age. At the same time, the government wants to start an employment program for the elderly.
