Springer VS (formerly VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften ) based in Wiesbaden is a publisher for classic and digital teaching and specialist media in the field of society in German-speaking countries. history

Springer VS emerged in 2012 from VS Verlag , which in 2004 brought together the two social science publishers Westdeutscher Verlag (founded in 1947) and Leske + Budrich . Leske + Budrich, in turn, was founded under this name in 1974 by Edmund Budrich in Opladen and taken over in 2003 by Bertelsmann Springer Verlag (now Springer Science + Business Media). The forerunner was Leske Verlag (formerly CW Leske Verlag ) in Darmstadt . Originally a branch of a bookstore in Giessen, the later publishing house traded as the “Hofbuchhandlung von CW Leske” from 1821 after Carl Wilhelm Leske took over management and specialized in historical and art-historical works as well as newspapers in the period that followed. After taking over the publishing house, Wilhelm's son Carl Friedrich Julius Leske became one of the most important publishers of radical writings in Vormärz . His son Alexander sold the business in 1940 to Wittich'sche Hofbuchdruckerei, which in turn ceded the publishing house to Friedrich Middelhauve in 1960 . Until it was taken over by Edmund Budrich, Leske Verlag remained integrated into Middelhauves Westdeutschen Verlag .
