The Sauwaldhof , also called Sauwald, is a dislocated training facility of the air landing and air transport school (LL / LTS) of the Bundeswehr located in Altenstadt . The official name is also the Sauwald training area.

terrain

The entire area of the on-site training area covers 43.8 hectares. Of this, 66.1 percent are forest areas and 33 percent are open spaces, predominantly grassland and meadows. The remaining almost one percent are paths, the various training facilities and the actual building, the Sauwaldhof, along with the outhouse. The site on a plateau is a former donation from the Bavarian Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauss to the German Armed Forces and part of the Steingaden-Sauwald training area. The Sauwaldhof is located 30 km south-southwest of Schongau in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau . The farm itself is about 4 km southwest of the municipality of Steingaden and about 2 km east of the municipality of Prem , on whose territory it is located. This makes Prem actually one of the smallest Bundeswehr locations, because only the so-called caretaker is permanently employed in Sauwaldhof, while the trainers and a cook at the training company travel from their office at the air landing and air transport school.

The Sauwaldhof has accommodation as well as teaching and training rooms for the implementation of courses, a food counter and some office and common rooms for the training and functional staff. There are numerous military training facilities on the adjacent training area and in the surrounding area, including rope bridges, a climbing garden, as well as an obstacle course and a group battle lane.

The air landing and air transport school previously carried out a large part of the lone fighter course in Sauwaldhof . This is currently only carried out in Hammelburg. Also at Sauwaldhof and the adjoining area there is a 5-day course in land survival for candidate officers of the Air Force, which is an integral part of the Air Force officer training. This training has been taking place in Pfullendorf at the Special Operations Training Center since 2015. The river Lech and the barrages of the Isar-Amperwerke ( E.ON Bayern since 2001) are included in this all-round training.

In the 1980s, lightning research with the help of rockets was carried out on the Sauwaldhof site. For this purpose, rockets to which a thin steel cable was attached were launched and lightning strikes were triggered during a thunderstorm.
