history

The LL / LTS established by Georg Werner at that time is located on the Burglachberg in the barracks , which has been named after Franz Josef Strauss since February 1993 . The first training personnel and the first parachutists of the battalions were trained by the 11th US Airborne Division in Augsburg (Sheridan and Reese barracks) and at the Gersthofen-Gablingen airfield . The LL / LTS started training in February 1958. In addition to the skydiving courses, various use and career courses are carried out, including a. the lone fighter course . The Sauwaldhof was used as an external training facility for this purpose. Since 1997 the LL / LTS has maintained a partnership with the French skydiving school ETAP in Pau .

Paratroopers are trained in automatic parachuting with olive-colored round-cap parachutes of the T-10 type. The planned introduction of the new automatic round canopy parachutes of the type T3F with reduced dropping height, which was planned in the 1990s, was discontinued after several accidents.

Special forces such as the Special Forces Command , the parachute special trains of the paratrooper regiments and the combat swimmers are trained in the " HAHO " with " parachutes ". With this, depending on the wind, distant destinations can be approached with pinpoint accuracy.

Numerous German champions, European and even world champions in skydiving trained in the sports promotion group at the LL / LTS and represented the Bundeswehr at military jump championships . Group training jumps from Transalls and civilian transport machines take place on the landing area adjacent to the north, next to the school's Altenstadt airfield .

In the training building there is a collection of German paratroopers deployed in various theaters of war in many vivid miniature panoramas in glass showcases.

As part of the realignment of the Bundeswehr, the dissolution of LL / LTS Altenstadt was announced in autumn 2011. In the future, this task should be taken over by the training base Air Landing and Air Transport of the International Helicopter Training Center in Oldenburg , which is to be set up from parts of the LL / LTS Altenstadt. The planned closure of the school was announced in 2011. According to State Secretary Christian Schmidt , the Federal Audit Office checked the relocation of LL / LTS to Oldenburg for its profitability.

The Bavarian State Chancellery announced on February 27, 2015 in a press statement that the airborne and air transportation training, according to a decision of the Federal Ministry of Defense is to remain in the Franz-Josef Strauss barracks in Bavaria Old city in the future.
