Martin Kilian Bridge in Wernigerode (2016)

The listed Martin-Kilian-Brücke (in the vernacular Kiliankreisel ) in Wernigerode , Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt is used as a bicycle and pedestrian crossing over Halberstädter Straße between the residential areas Burgbreite and Stadtfeld .

location

The bridge at the eastern entrance to Wernigerode spans Halberstädter Strasse, one of the city's most important arterial roads.

Architecture and history

The curved steel construction rests on two pylons in the shape of a gyro, which form a kind of city gate. A footpath and cycle path on synthetic resin pavement leads above it.

The bridge created the connection from the POS, located in the new development area Burgbreite, to the gym on the other side of the busy trunk road 6 (the later federal road 6 , today L  85).

The building was built on the initiative of the then mayor Martin Kilian ( SED ) and the city architect Wolfgang Köhler. Planning began in 1974 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the GDR. One million GDR marks were available for the construction costs . The design engineer Dieter Eilers from VEB Stahlbau und Montage Wernigerode was involved in the drafts, which were based on the model of a steel bridge in Berlin.

Construction work on Halberstädter Strasse began at the beginning of 1977. On October 6, 1977 - one day before the anniversary of the founding of the GDR - the inauguration of the bridge took place.

In memory of the long-time mayor of Wernigerode, Lord Mayor Peter Gaffert (independent) named the bridge the Martin Kilian Bridge on November 17, 2016 .

In the local register of monuments , the bridge is listed as a monument under registration number 094 25158.
