The width of the castle lies in the east of the city of Wernigerode. It is bounded in the west by the old town, with the Breite Straße leading into it , in the north by the former Bundesstraße 6 (Halberstädter Straße, Benzingeröder Chaussee) and in the south by the Lustgarten and the chestnut grove.

Emergence

The Burgbreite was the first residential area in the city of Wernigerode to be built using prefabricated panels. In the 1980s the residential areas Stadtfeld and Harzblick followed . Under the direction of VEB Housing Combine Halberstadt , over 2000 district heating apartments for around 3000 residents were built in the five and six- story prefabricated buildings of the type Halle IW 64 as part of the five-year plan from 1971 to 1976 .

In connection with what was then the largest construction project in the Wernigerode district, a 5000 cubic meter high-level tank was built south of Burgbreite on the edge of the pleasure garden, the municipal sewage treatment plant was expanded and a new substation was created.

The Burgbreite is accessible by the city bus lines 203, 204 and the night line 205 with the city center and the other districts of Wernigerode.

After 1990

Since the beginning of the 1990s, numerous apartment blocks have been refurbished and given colored, heat-insulating facades. The pedestrian zone “Platz des Friedens”, the pedestrian bridge over Halberstädter Strasse to the Stadtfeld residential area, the Burgbreite secondary school and the senior citizens' home were extensively renovated. The municipal housing association GWW built its central administration building in place of the former large Burgbreite restaurant.

In contrast to many other prefabricated housing areas in other cities in eastern Germany, no apartment block was demolished in the Burgbreite due to the low vacancy rate.
