Gustav Rudolf Tafel , also Gustavus Tafel (born October 13, 1830 in Munich , † November 12, 1908 in Cincinnati , Ohio , USA ) was a German-American printer, officer in the American Civil War and mayor of Cincinnati.

biography

Tafel was born in Munich in 1830. His parents were the Württemberg Bible translator Johann Friedrich Leonhard Tafel (1800–1880) and Carolina Luise Vaihinger (1801–1887). He was married to Therese Dorn (born October 15, 1849 in Trieste, † May 26, 1909 in Cincinnati / Ohio). The marriage resulted in 11 children.

At the age of 18, in 1849, Gustav emigrated to North America with his brother Gustav Albert before his parents did. The parents followed in 1853. In Cincinnati, Ohio, the brothers found shelter with their aunt Vaihinger, a sister of their mother. Gustav and Albert Tafel were part of the group of emigrants called the Forty-Eight . They emigrated to America for political and religious reasons in 1848/1849.

Career

Tafel found a job as a printer in Cincinnati, Ohio, with its large community of German immigrants, and worked his way up to becoming a newspaper editor.

When the American Civil War broke out and Governor William Dennison recruited volunteers for the army, Tafel signed up with the "Cincinnati Gymnastics Club" and served in the predominantly German 9th Ohio Infantry Regiment , first as a sergeant (first sergeant), from June 1862 as a lieutenant (second lieutenant).

In August 1862, he was a lieutenant colonel in command of the 106th Infantry Regiment (also known as "The 4th Regiment German") transferred (Lieutenant Colonel). When the regiment was disbanded on June 29, 1865, Tafel also resigned from service in the army.

Tafel then worked as a lawyer in Cincinnati. As a member of the Democratic Party , he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1866 to 1868 and mayor of Cincinnati from 1897 to 1900 .
