Gustav Adolph Dierks Thomsen (born June 26, 1833 in Zennhusen ; † February 22, 1915 there ) was an entrepreneur and member of the German Reichstag .

Life

Thomsen attended country schools and a boarding school. He was active as a farmer and entrepreneur in a variety of ways. In 1871 he founded the Tönninger Dampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft, of which he was also director. The purpose of the enterprise was to transport cattle to England and coal to Germany. To finance young cattle breeding through so-called grass loans, he founded the Tönninger loan bank (later: Schleswig-Holsteinische Bank) in 1875 and the Westholsteinische Bank in 1896. Foot and mouth disease broke out in England as early as 1889, causing heavy losses to its companies. The shipping company was dissolved in 1893. He also owned a timber business and founded and ran a book and newspaper publisher.

Thomsen was politically active first with the Liberal Association , then with the German Freedom Party . However, he came into conflict with them because he did not speak out against Bismarck's policies.

Between 1881 and 1898 he was a member of the German Reichstag for the constituency of the province of Schleswig-Holstein 5 Dithmarschen , Steinburg .

Thomsen is buried with his family in the cemetery in Hemme . The crypt is the most impressive tomb in the small village cemetery.
