Gustav Zimmermann (born December 2, 1888 in Liedolsheim , † August 1, 1949 in Karlsruhe ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Life and work

Zimmermann completed an apprenticeship as a locksmith and then worked as a mechanic and seaman as well as a technical and commercial clerk. From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War as a soldier . He was badly wounded during the war. From 1919 to 1933 he worked as an editor for Volksstimme in Mannheim and from 1931 he was director of the publishing house. In 1933 he was taken into “ protective custody ” and later sentenced to three years in prison for editing a banned newspaper. After he was acquitted in the appeal procedure, he was initially unemployed, worked briefly as managing director of a paper goods factory in 1936/37 and then worked as a representative in export companies until the end of the war. From 1945 to 1949 he was a consultant for the reconstruction in Mannheim, then the executive president of the Baden district.

Political party

Zimmermann joined the SPD before 1919. From 1919 to 1923 as well as from 1924 to 1933 he was deputy state chairman and 1923/24 state chairman of the SPD Baden . In 1945 he was elected deputy state chairman of the SPD Württemberg-Baden.

MP

Zimmermann was a city councilor from 1919 to 1923 and then a city councilor in Mannheim until 1933. In 1946 he was a member of the Provisional Representation of the People for Württemberg-Baden and then a member of the Constituent Assembly of Württemberg-Baden . He was then elected to the state parliament of Württemberg-Baden , to which he belonged as vice-president until his death. In parliament he represented constituency 3 (Mannheim). In 1948/49 he was a member of the Parliamentary Council . Here he was deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group.

Public offices

Zimmermann had been Deputy Mayor of Mannheim since 1945. From 1945 to 1949 he was State Director of the Interior in Baden.
