Gustave Chevallier

Gustave Chevallier (* 1849 , † 1917 ) was a French Roman Catholic clergyman, theologian and church historian.

life and work

Abbé Chevallier was "Apostolic Missionary" and pastor of Fixin (10 km south of Dijon ), where there was a grangie of the Cistercians since 1142 , the Manoir de la Perrière . Chevallier was also canon in Dijon. Beyond that, only his writings are known.

Chevallier is the author of four biographical works. He had the greatest success in 1888 with a detailed life story of St. Bernard of Clairvaux , which was published five times in a short time (also promoted by the celebration of Bernhard's 800th birthday in 1890), but was then outshone by the masterpiece by Elphège Vacandard published in 1895 . Other biographies concerned William of Dijon (962-1031), the Dijon bishop François Victor Rivet (1796-1884) and the Archbishop of Cambrai Marie-Alphonse Sonnois (1828-1913), who came from Lamargelle near Dijon.
