Gustavus Michaelis

Gustavus Michaelis (born August 24, 1844 in Stettin ; † February 7, 1925 ) was a German-American chemist and pharmacist .

Life

After high school he studied at the University of Berlin and graduated in chemistry and pharmacy. In 1870 he emigrated to the United States and established himself as a pharmacist in Albany , New York . On January 16, 1873, he married Bertha Charlotte Schindler. In 1877 he founded the Albany Pharmaceutical Co. and was the first to offer a solution of ethyl nitrite in alcohol under the name Concentrated Nitrous Ether . The Albany College of Pharmacy appointed him professor of chemistry and pharmacy in 1881. In the same year he founded the Albany Chemical Company . In 1884 he discovered a process for the production of chloroform that eventually led to the introduction of acetone as a solvent and its use in the production of smokeless powder. He therefore had a three-year patent dispute with R&H. He was also the inventor of some chemical processes and a member of numerous associations and clubs. He is buried in Menands .
