location

The sports hall, located south of the historic Quedlinburg old town, is registered in the Quedlinburg monument register as a gym. The Bode runs east of the building . The hall is named after the founder of gymnastics, Johann Christoph Friedrich GutsMuth , who was born in Quedlinburg .

Architecture and history

The facade of the hall, which was built in 1887, is an alternation of brick and sandstone and shows a strong structure. Its design refers to the industrial architecture of the building on the opposite side of the street of the former Gebrüder Dippe seed breeding company . On the north side of the gymnasium is a two-storey building wing.

In 1985, the hall on a proposal from the town of Quedlinburg has been prepared by the Institute for Plant Breeding Research in legal ownership transferred. The BSG Wissenschaft took over the operation of the hall until 1990, whereby the members of the BSG provided 4500 hours of personal work for the reconstruction of the hall . The gymnasium, which was almost a hundred years old at that time, was still in regular use, especially for school sports, and was one of the largest sports halls in the city. However, their structural condition was impaired. In a report from 1985, the sprung floor and the size of the hall were positively emphasized. Leaks in the roof were noted negatively, which required immediate action. Three cannon stoves were available to heat the hall, but they were insufficient in winter. There were two small changing rooms and a toilet room with two sinks. Use in winter was not possible because of the risk of frost. The caretaker's apartment in the hall was used at least until 1986.
