Rock formation on Guttenberg

Granite blocks characterize the summit, in these there are also some shells that have been formed by weathering. Just below the summit there is a layered solid granite block that resembles a hermitage. While the western slope is covered with forests, you have a very good view on the other sides. From here you can see the entire Waldviertel, when the air is clear, the view extends to the Ötscher, the Schneeberg and the Rax.

The mountain is mentioned for the first time in 1160, and in 1255 there is a castle ( castrum in Gutenberch ) on the mountain belonging to the network of the Waldviertel Wachtberge . In 1465 the remains of this castle were then used to build a ski jump (Tabor), in 1581 there was only talk of a desolate castle . Today there are no structural remains, only vaults and traces of ramparts and moats can be found.
