life and work

Guy Harloff was born in 1933 to a Dutch - Russian father and a mother of Italian - Swiss descent. Harloff was always a traveler who felt at home all over the world.

He lived in Milan , London , New York City and Paris and traveled extensively. He studied ethnic and religious rituals , religions, traditions and symbols, with a special focus on the East. The preoccupation with alchemy also left traces in his works.

Guy Harloff's work is shaped by his interest in cultural symbols and the written word. His painting was complex, colorful, hard, mystical, full of content and mystery. Harloff wanted to enable the viewer to discover knowledge buried in himself and his own vision of the world.

He lived his life so intensely and struggled hard to get the friendship and appreciation of his fellow artists that it resulted in permanent health problems until his untimely death.

Guy Harloff took part in Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 in the Individual Mythologies department with six of his picture and collage works .
