Gya is a place in the Indian Union Territory of Ladakh .
Location and inhabitants
The place is located southeast of Leh on the Manali-Leh Highway near the Hemis National Park , on the Gya River . You can reach Gya from Leh via Upshi and the 5,317 m high Taglang La Pass. The neighboring villages are Rumtse and Miru . In 2011 658 people lived in the place. The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture, which is possible at an altitude of 4,237 m, despite the dryness with little rainfall, thanks to the meltwater from the surrounding mountains. The Border Roads organization is another important employer for the residents of this remote village.

Above, on the other side of the valley, there is an old gompa that was rebuilt by the inhabitants. There are more Buddhist ruins to be found around Gya. Gya is one of the oldest settlements in Ladakh. Gya became the first seat of government of a Mon ruler, around the 10th century, known as Gyapacho .
