Maylandia emmiltos ( Syn . Metriaclima emmiltos ) is a cichlid which endemic in Mpanga-Felsriff near Chilumba on the seaward side of the East African Malawi Malawisee occurs.
features
Maylandia emmiltos has a typical Mbuna shape and is very similar to Maylandia pyrsonotos and Maylandia sandaracinos . Sexually mature males are light blue with seven black transverse bands. The head is black with two light blue ribbons between the eyes. The dorsal fin is reddish to orange, the first fin ray and the tips of the fin membranes are white. In contrast to Maylandia pyrsonotos, the transverse ligament of the sides does not extend into the dorsal fin. The caudal fin is orange and has bluish fin rays. The front edge of the otherwise transparent pelvic fins is black. The anal fin is dark blue to gray in front and has six to seven egg spots on the back. Many females are similarly colored, but are spotted green and the stripes between the eyes are green, while others are brownish in color. The anal fin of the females has no egg spots.
The jaws have two to three rows of teeth. The teeth of the outermost row of teeth are usually two-pointed, some at the back are single-pointed. The teeth of the inner rows of teeth are three-pointed. On the first gill arch there are 10 to 14 gill rakes on the ceratobranchial, 2 to 3 on the epibranchial and one between these gill arch elements. Maylandia emmiltos differs from Maylandia sandaracinos in that it has fewer teeth in the outermost row of teeth.
- Fins formula : dorsal XVII – XVIII / 8–10, anal III / 6–8, pectoral 8–14.
- Scale formula : SL 30–32.
Like almost all Malawi cichlids and all mbuna, Maylandia emmiltos is an ovophilic mouthbrooder in which the female takes care of the brood.
